Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport ranks among worlds top‑10 airports

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has been recognised among the top 10 airports worldwide by Travel + Leisure’s prestigious World’s Best Awards 2025. Securing a commendable reader score of 84.23 in the ‘Readers’ 10 Favourite International Airports of 2025’ category, this accolade underscores CSMIA’s unwavering commitment to delivering world-class hospitality and an exceptional passenger journey. The recognition highlights the airport’s pivotal role in shaping Mumbai’s identity as a global hub, aligning with the broader vision of developing future-ready, sustainable urban infrastructure.

The esteemed ranking reflects CSMIA’s comprehensive approach to enhancing the travel experience, lauded specifically for its thoughtful amenities, vibrant retail and food and beverage offerings, and an immersive ambience that captures the spirit of the city. This consistent performance, marking the third consecutive year CSMIA has featured on this exclusive list, distinguishes it as the sole Indian airport to achieve such sustained international acclaim. It demonstrates a deep-seated dedication to operational excellence and a forward-thinking strategy focused on integrating technology and sustainability into every facet of its services, thereby contributing to a more equitable and efficient transport network.

Spanning over 1,900 acres, CSMIA maintains its distinction as the world’s busiest single-runway airport and ranks as India’s second busiest in terms of passenger traffic. Its unique cross-runway configuration efficiently manages close to 1,000 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) daily, a testament to its robust operational capabilities and sophisticated air traffic management systems. This high volume of operations, managed with precision and a focus on environmental responsibility, exemplifies how critical infrastructure can support economic growth while striving for reduced carbon footprints, a key tenet of zero net carbon cities.

The airport serves as a vital gateway, offering direct connectivity to approximately 54 international destinations and 67 domestic locations, facilitated by around 51 international and seven domestic carriers. In the fiscal year 2024-25, CSMIA efficiently managed an impressive passenger traffic of around 55.12 million travellers, showcasing its capacity and strategic importance. Recent transformative measures, including the broader integration of DigiYatra and FTI-TTP, further streamline operations by enabling a completely paperless, biometric-based travel experience. These innovations not only enhance convenience but also contribute to eco-friendly practices, reducing resource consumption.

CSMIA’s consistent global recognition reinforces Mumbai’s position on the international stage, demonstrating that Indian infrastructure can compete with the best globally while embracing principles of sustainability and technological advancement. This achievement is a beacon for other urban centres aspiring to create eco-friendly, gender-neutral, and equitable cities where efficient and accessible transport hubs play a crucial role in fostering economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. The airport’s ongoing evolution underscores India’s commitment to building a future where connectivity and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
