Chennai’s SWD Interlinking Delays Raise Monsoon Flood Concerns

Chennai’s efforts to mitigate flooding risk ahead of the northeast monsoon face significant delays as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) struggles to interlink storm water drains (SWDs) with natural water bodies. Despite accelerating construction activities, the focus remains on completing individual drain segments rather than ensuring connectivity crucial for effective flood management.

The GCC, tasked with enhancing the city’s resilience against heavy rainfall, has come under scrutiny for its approach. Residents across various neighbourhoods, including Pulianthope, Pattalam, and Madhavaram, express ongoing concerns over inundation during even moderate rains due to unconnected SWDs. The lack of integration prevents excess water from draining into nearby channels, exacerbating urban flooding woes. In north Chennai, where recent flooding incidents disrupted daily life for weeks, local communities continue to push for immediate action on SWD interlinking. Despite sporadic efforts such as those on Ambedkar Salai and Perambur Barracks Road, where projects have been left incomplete, residents fear a repeat scenario in the upcoming monsoon season.

Critics highlight the urgent need for comprehensive planning and execution to connect existing SWDs with natural drainage systems like the Cooum River. This integration, long advocated by civic activists and residents alike, remains a pivotal measure in averting urban flooding disasters. Responding to queries, a senior GCC official acknowledged that while construction pace has accelerated, the interlinking process remains at 75% completion. Efforts are underway to expedite desilting and silt pit clearing operations across the city to enhance drainage efficiency.

Despite substantial investment in SWD construction, the lack of a cohesive interlinking strategy poses a critical barrier to effective flood control. As Chennai braces for potentially intense rainfall in the upcoming monsoon seasons, the GCC’s ability to swiftly finalize interlinking projects will be crucial in safeguarding vulnerable communities and ensuring sustainable urban development.
