Chennai is set for a public transport revolution, with local authorities introducing standardised designs for bus stops, footpaths, and parking spaces. This initiative aims to enhance last-mile connectivity and boost intermediate public transport (IPT) options like share autos, cabs, and auto-rickshaws. The Chennai Corporation and other local bodies across the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) are spearheading this transformative step, which aligns with the advanced stages of the region’s parking policy, strategy, and action plan. Once finalised, this policy will enable a comprehensive overhaul of parking facilities, creating more accessible, well-designed infrastructure for commuters.
The pilot project will begin in key areas such as Anna Nagar, where the reliance on IPT is high. While only 200 share autos are officially permitted across Chennai and its neighbouring districts, over 6,000 operate, underscoring their critical role in meeting the city’s transportation demands. The revamped bus stops will feature reduced advertisement sizes, prioritising commuter-centric amenities such as better signage and enhanced visibility. This step is expected to not only improve the aesthetics of public spaces but also address commuter convenience, making public transport a more viable option for the masses.
From a sustainability perspective, the project emphasises the integration of non-motorised transport facilities. Improved footpaths and dedicated parking for intermediate transport modes aim to reduce dependency on personal vehicles, thus minimising traffic congestion and lowering the city’s carbon footprint. These eco-friendly measures highlight the government’s commitment to building a greener, more sustainable urban environment.
