In a landmark initiative to enhance safety and promote economic independence among women, the Chennai government has introduced a scheme for 200 ‘pink autos’ exclusively driven by women. This initiative, led by the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, provides a Rs 1 lakh grant per applicant, aimed at facilitating access to CNG/hybrid autos. Women residing in Chennai, aged between 25 to 45, with a valid driving licence and a minimum educational qualification of Class 10, are encouraged to apply by November 23. This move supports self-employment for women while providing safer transport options, particularly at railway stations and bus stands, with an estimated budget allocation of Rs 2 crore.
Addressing the State Assembly earlier this year, the Social Welfare Minister emphasised the dual purpose of this scheme—encouraging women to join the workforce while promoting safer transport avenues for female commuters. The grant is prioritised for widows and destitute women, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for vulnerable sections of society. Additionally, all pink autos are fitted with GPS systems and linked to the women’s helpline number, 181, for emergency response, reflecting the government’s commitment to women’s safety and technological integration.
Sustainability is central to the scheme, as the chosen autos are either CNG or hybrid vehicles, aligning with Chennai’s increasing focus on eco-friendly transportation. This initiative is part of a broader urban sustainability drive that integrates women’s empowerment with environmental awareness, providing eco-friendly options in an otherwise fuel-intensive auto market.
