Chennai’s Anna Salai Traffic Overhaul to Begin
Chennai’s Anna Salai-GP Road junction, a notorious hotspot for traffic snarls, is set to undergo a major overhaul starting this Sunday, as part of an initiative by Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) aimed at alleviating congestion. The junction, which connects the busy General Patters Road (GP Road) to Anna Salai, has long been a bottleneck for vehicles, particularly during peak hours, leading to considerable delays and frustration for commuters. In an effort to streamline traffic flow and ease the pressure on this critical junction, authorities have announced a series of changes to the existing traffic pattern.
Under the new plan, vehicles travelling from GP Road towards Parrys will no longer be allowed to cross the Anna Salai-GP Road junction directly. Instead, vehicles will be diverted to the left, allowing them to take a U-turn near the LIC building (where a proposed centre median will be opened) towards Dams Road. This will effectively reduce the conflict between incoming and outgoing traffic at the junction, which has been a major contributor to the traffic congestion. The changes aim to provide a continuous flow of vehicles, preventing stoppages that often exacerbate the gridlock, especially during peak travel times.
In addition to this, vehicles traveling from Anna Statue via GP Road towards Tower Clock junction will continue to follow the same route as before, with no disruption to their movement. Meanwhile, vehicles travelling from Anna Flyover towards GP Road will be diverted to take a U-turn near Mount Road mosque, close to the famous Buhari Hotel, and head towards GP Road. These modifications are designed to reduce congestion at the junction and ensure a smoother transition of traffic through one of Chennai’s busiest intersections.
From a sustainability perspective, these changes are a welcome step in reducing both traffic congestion and air pollution. As urban traffic volumes continue to increase, it has become increasingly important to create more sustainable and efficient traffic systems.
