Chennai Weather Forecast Predicts More Rain and Cooling

Chennai has experienced a brief but welcome respite from the intense heat that dominated the city throughout March, as temperatures dropped by up to 4°C on Wednesday.

This sudden change in weather came courtesy of cloudy skies and light rain, providing much-needed relief to residents who had been battling the scorching heat.
According to weather experts, Nungambakkam recorded 32.3°C, which is 1.9°C below the normal temperature for this time of year, while Meenambakkam saw a slightly lower temperature of 31.5°C, 3.8°C below normal. Despite receiving only light rainfall, the change in weather has brought some relief from the high temperatures that had pushed the city’s mercury up to 40°C just days earlier. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the temperature in Chennai will remain between 32°C and 33°C for the next three days, with light rain expected in some parts of the city. These showers, while not heavy, are set to continue until April 9, helping to keep the temperatures in check. However, the weather will remain unstable, with the possibility of more frequent rain activity in certain parts of the state.
According to N Senthamarai Kannan, the director of the regional weather forecasting centre, the temperature drop was a result of a low-pressure trough over the Comorin area, which triggered heavy rains in the interior and southern parts of Tamil Nadu. Coastal areas like Chennai received only light spells of rain, which was enough to provide temporary relief but insufficient to bring about significant changes in the city’s overall climate conditions.
For the next few days, Chennai will continue to experience mild temperatures, but residents can expect an uptick in temperatures after April 5 when rain activity starts to subside. The IMD suggests that while rain will still occur in some isolated pockets, there will be a general increase in the temperatures across the city and surrounding areas. Mahesh Palawat, the chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, further explained that from April 7 to 9, parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Karnataka are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall. While Chennai may see some scattered rainfall during this period, the most significant change in weather conditions is expected towards the end of the week, when temperatures will rise by about 2°C.
Though this period of cool weather is temporary, it offers a brief but much-needed break for residents who were forced to endure high temperatures and heatwaves for the past few weeks. As Chennai braces for another rise in temperature, the forecasts suggest that the coming days will offer a mix of mild rains and rising temperatures, making it important for citizens to stay prepared for unpredictable weather conditions. This respite also highlights the need for sustainable urban planning and infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of fluctuating temperatures and extreme weather events. With the rise in temperatures and changing weather patterns, it becomes imperative to take action toward making cities more resilient and adaptable to climate change.
