Chennai Updates August 4 Petrol Diesel Prices Unchanged Today

As of Monday, August 4, 2025, petrol in Chennai is retailing at ₹100.80 per litre while diesel is priced at ₹92.39 per litre. These rates have remained unchanged for several days amidst stable global crude prices and consistent exchange rates. The pricing reflects daily revisions carried out by oil marketing companies based on fluctuations in international crude costs, foreign exchange movements, and local taxes. The central government, on April 7, increased the excise duty on fuel by ₹2 per litre — raising petrol to ₹13 and diesel to ₹10 per litre. Combined with state VAT and dealer commissions, taxes now constitute nearly 50‑60% of the pump price.

Despite changes in fiscal policy, Chennai’s rates have remained stable at ₹100.80 for petrol and ₹92.39 for diesel this week—reflecting minimal volatility in global benchmarks like Brent and sustained confidence in India’s rupee against the US dollar. This price consistency offers commuters and businesses predictability in budgeting transportation costs. However, analysts warn that prolonged low volatility does little to cushion end-consumers in the long term, especially as global market shocks or currency fluctuations could quickly alter costs. From an urban equity and sustainability lens, steady fuel prices may reduce pressure on lower‑income drivers but do not substitute for structural shifts toward cleaner public transport and electric mobility. Experts assert that as cities like Chennai strive for net‑zero carbon targets, policy dialogues must pivot from fossil‑fuel subsidies toward investment in zero‑emission transit and demand management strategies.

Advisories issued by fuel authorities urge motorists to monitor prices daily—since rates are now updated at 6 a.m. each morning. State-specific VAT differences also affect Chennai’s pricing relative to other major cities; for instance, petrol in Delhi stood around ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 on the same date. Critics note that centralised excise hikes without state synchronisation create disparities across regions. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu’s VAT structure tends to keep fuel prices slightly higher compared with adjacent states. With Chennai’s urban population heavily reliant on private vehicles and taxi services, even modest price stability can significantly influence daily household expenditure. But environmentalists emphasise that true mobility affordability must address hidden costs — congestion, pollution, and infrastructure wear.

Looking ahead, Chennai’s policymakers face the challenge of balancing fuel revenue with climate-aligned transport models — including expanded metro networks, efficient bus corridors and policies that discourage fossil‑fuel dependency.
