Chennai To Vellore Connectivity Boosted As State Plans 142-Km Six-Lane Highway

Tamil Nadu is preparing for a major infrastructure upgrade with plans to build a 142-kilometre six-lane highway linking Chennai to Vellore, a move expected to significantly enhance connectivity for industries and commuters. The proposed access-controlled corridor will not only shorten travel times between the state capital and Vellore but also provide seamless freight access to key ports, offering a vital boost to the region’s industrial ecosystem.

According to highway department officials, the new route will branch out from the under-construction Chennai Peripheral Ring Road near Oragadam and extend towards Vellore via Cheyyar SIPCOT, with a partial greenfield alignment. This will provide direct road access to the Oragadam industrial cluster, Cheyyar’s automotive hub, and a new SIPCOT park planned along NH38 in Vellore. A 68-kilometre stretch between Oragadam and Cheyyar is already under land acquisition, indicating that the project is moving beyond the drawing board. The highway’s design also reflects lessons from the shelved Chennai-Salem expressway, following parts of its alignment but balancing development with practical considerations. From Cheyyar, the route is expected to run along the Vellore–Tiruvannamalai highway, cutting across Arcot-Tindivanam State Highway before merging with NH38 in Vellore district. The alignment would allow vehicles from GST Road and Chengalpattu to bypass long detours and directly access Arcot and Vellore, reducing bottlenecks along the congested Chennai–Bengaluru national highway.

Planners emphasise that the highway is not merely a passenger route but a strategic freight corridor. At present, goods from Cheyyar SIPCOT must travel on narrow state highways or detour through congested bypasses to reach Ennore or Kattupalli ports. Once completed, the new six-lane link is expected to streamline cargo movement, reduce logistics costs, and support Tamil Nadu’s ambition of achieving a trillion-dollar economy anchored by manufacturing and exports. A consultant is being appointed to study whether widening the existing Cheyyar–Vellore highways or constructing a new greenfield road would be more efficient. The feasibility report will also assess the scope for creating dedicated industrial corridors along NH38, ensuring that the project dovetails with long-term industrial development in the region.

Infrastructure experts note that while expanding road networks is essential for economic growth, Tamil Nadu will also need to ensure that the highway incorporates sustainable practices. Measures such as green landscaping, provision for electric vehicle charging, and better integration with rail freight corridors could help balance industrial growth with the state’s climate commitments. For now, the proposed Chennai–Vellore corridor is viewed as a catalyst for unlocking industrial growth zones in Cheyyar and Vellore, while also providing relief to thousands of daily commuters. If implemented as planned, the six-lane project could redefine freight efficiency and urban mobility in northern Tamil Nadu, bridging economic hubs with faster, safer and cleaner road connectivity.
