Chennai Records Heavy Rain High Humidity And Cleaner Air As AQI Improves

Chennai is expected to experience steady rainfall and cooler temperatures this week, bringing relief from pollution and improving the city’s air quality index (AQI). According to data from AQI.in, Monday saw moderate showers with temperatures ranging from 23.4°C to 24.5°C and an 88% humidity level. The AQI recorded a healthy reading of 43, indicating one of the cleanest air days this month — a welcome respite for residents often troubled by post-monsoon dust and vehicular emissions.

The city’s air quality continues to improve due to rainfall and steady winds, which have effectively dispersed fine particulate matter. Officials noted that the combination of rain and moderate winds has significantly lowered pollution levels, providing favourable atmospheric conditions for air cleansing. The latest data showed PM2.5 concentrations at 25 µg/m³ and PM10 at 34 µg/m³ — both within safe limits. Carbon monoxide levels remained low at 412 µg/m³, indicating reduced vehicular congestion during rain hours. While the rain has brought environmental benefits, the persistent humidity is expected to make the days slightly uncomfortable. Meteorological experts forecast that the city will witness its heaviest spells during the late afternoon, followed by calm evenings. Winds may reach up to 25.6 km/h before tapering off by dusk. Despite the dampness, the air remains fresh and breathable, providing much-needed relief to those with respiratory sensitivities.

However, the wet conditions have created challenges for commuters and households. Roads may become slippery due to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, while the combination of moisture and warmth could trigger indoor mould formation. Health experts recommend ensuring adequate ventilation at home and maintaining dry indoor environments. Residents are advised to use dehumidifiers or fans to offset the discomfort caused by high humidity. Officials from the weather department have advised motorists to drive cautiously, particularly along key corridors like Mount Road, OMR, and Anna Salai, which tend to experience traffic slowdowns during showers.

The extended weather outlook suggests that the rain will persist until October 31, followed by a gradual return to partly sunny conditions. October 28 is expected to see patchy rainfall with temperatures rising slightly to 25.7°C, while October 29 could touch 32°C with scattered showers. November 1 and 2 are likely to be drier and sunnier, offering residents a brief break from continuous rain. The combination of rain-cooled weather and improved air quality has made this one of Chennai’s most comfortable weeks in recent months — a positive outcome for public health and environmental balance in the region.
