Chennai is set to transform a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the iconic Marina Beach into a heritage-driven public corridor.
The ₹18.45-crore project, anchored by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), is poised to reintroduce the historic elegance of the Marina promenade while responding to modern civic needs.The project, spanning from the historic Lighthouse to the Island Grounds, has been framed as a heritage-led urban regeneration initiative, integrating environmentally sensitive infrastructure with the preservation of architectural identity. The development draws inspiration from Madras’s colonial-era charm and is expected to reach completion within the next ten months.
What sets this project apart is its ecologically responsible planning—ensuring full compliance with Coastal Regulation Zone norms by avoiding permanent structures, while maximising accessibility, safety, and aesthetics. CMDA, in partnership with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), is overseeing design and execution to maintain the Marina’s integrity both as a historic space and a contemporary public utility.As part of the plan, nine bus shelters will be installed along the stretch, designed in Indo-Saracenic style—a nod to Tamil Nadu’s colonial-era architecture. Built using stone, brick, and terracotta-inspired materials, the structures will feature arched forms and lattice brickwork for passive ventilation. Each will be outfitted with shaded seating, digital information panels, green buffers, and tactile paving to support universal access.
Central to the corridor is a dedicated cycle track, envisioned to promote non-motorised, zero-emission transport. It will have marked lanes, rest zones, lighting, and safety signage, reviving the character of the original promenade, once graced by carriages and open-air strolls.The CMDA will also establish strategically located police booths—modular and temporary in design—to strengthen safety and public access. Despite their compact footprint, these booths will retain the corridor’s aesthetic consistency through arched forms and soft lighting.In an effort to foster public engagement with Chennai’s layered coastal history, viewing decks will be constructed at heritage sites along the route, including the Senate House, Madras University, and Presidency College. Equipped with shaded seating and educational panels, each deck will offer QR codes linking visitors to self-guided digital heritage trails.
These immersive experiences aim to cultivate civic pride while reinforcing the cultural importance of the city’s eastern seaboard.The corridor’s blueprint reflects adherence to heritage conservation standards rooted in the recommendations of the Justice E. Padmanabhan Committee. From regulated building heights to the use of traditional finishes such as exposed brick and latticework, the project is a conscious effort to restore the Marina’s visual language while remaining functionally contemporary.Lighting systems along the walkway will be upgraded with heritage-themed fixtures, while rest areas and transition zones are designed to minimise pedestrian–cyclist conflict. Every fixture, material, and structure is to be approved individually to ensure alignment with the heritage narrative and low-carbon development goals.
This initiative is not merely an infrastructure upgrade—it is a statement of intent for sustainable urbanism, balancing Chennai’s coastal ecology, transport equity, and historical context.
