Chennai Peripheral Ring Road to Open by 2026

Chennai is on the verge of a significant infrastructure milestone with the impending completion of its first 10-lane expressway, the 132.87 km Peripheral Ring Road (PRR). This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC), is set to open by January 2026, promising to alleviate the city’s chronic traffic congestion and enhance regional connectivity.

The PRR is designed as a greenfield, access-controlled expressway stretching from Ennore Port in the north to Poonjeri near Mamallapuram in the south. The road will feature six main carriageway lanes, two service lanes on each side, and a central median, making it the state’s first 10-lane expressway. With a proposed right of way of 60 meters and a design speed of 120 km/h, the expressway aims to facilitate smooth and efficient traffic flow across the city. Upon completion, the PRR will serve as Chennai’s fourth ring road, connecting key industrial and logistics hubs such as Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Thiruvallur, Tamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam, Puduvoyal, and Kattupalli. This strategic connectivity is expected to streamline freight movement, reduce urban congestion, and bolster economic activities in the region.

In line with sustainable development goals, the PRR project incorporates measures to minimize environmental impact and promote eco-friendly practices. The road’s design includes provisions for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to enhance traffic management and safety. Additionally, the project aims to improve access to underserved areas, contributing to more equitable urban development. The PRR project is being implemented in five sections, with funding sourced from both domestic and international institutions. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has extended a loan of 40,074 million yen (approximately ₹2,800 crore) for Phase 2 of the project, covering the 26.55 km stretch from Thatchur to the Thiruvallur Bypass. Other funding partners include the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), which are financing different sections of the project.

As of early 2025, significant progress has been made on various sections of the PRR. The Ennore to Thatchur stretch is under construction by Tata Projects Ltd., while other sections are being developed by contractors such as Larsen & Toubro and Oriental Structural Engineers Pvt. Ltd. Authorities anticipate that the completed expressway will not only cut travel time but also contribute to lowering air pollution by reducing vehicle idling in traffic. The completion of the PRR is expected to have a transformative impact on Chennai’s transportation landscape, providing residents and businesses with a more efficient and sustainable mobility option. As the project nears its final stages, stakeholders remain optimistic about its potential to reshape the city’s infrastructure and contribute to its long-term growth and development.
