Chennai: In a significant step towards advancing urban infrastructure, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Transport and Development Policy (ITDP), a prominent city-based non-governmental organisation. This partnership aims to leverage ITDP’s expertise as a knowledge partner to bolster infrastructure projects within the metropolitan area.
The formal agreement was signed by the South Asia Director of ITDP and an official from CMDA, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort focused on sustainable urban development. This partnership builds on ITDP’s existing role as the knowledge and technical partner for Chennai Smart City initiatives, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to fostering sustainable mobility and urban planning.
Under this new MoU, ITDP will concentrate on several critical areas, including the promotion of non-motorised transport, the development of healthy streets, and comprehensive studies on public transport accessibility. Additionally, ITDP will provide insights into infrastructure improvements and the enhancement of inclusive master planning, aiming to create a more accessible and equitable urban environment. One of the key initiatives will be the formulation of policies to support non-motorised transport. This involves creating a conducive environment for pedestrians and cyclists, thereby encouraging healthier and more sustainable modes of transport. By focusing on the development of ‘healthy streets,’ the partnership aims to transform Chennai’s urban landscape into a more liveable and pedestrian-friendly space.
Another significant aspect of the collaboration is the emphasis on accessibility to public transport. ITDP will conduct detailed studies to identify gaps and propose solutions to improve the ease of access to public transportation systems. This initiative is expected to enhance the overall efficiency and attractiveness of public transport, reducing reliance on private vehicles and thereby alleviating urban congestion and pollution. Infrastructure improvements will also be a priority under the MoU. ITDP will bring its technical expertise to bear on projects aimed at upgrading existing infrastructure and developing new facilities that support sustainable urban mobility. This includes the integration of various modes of transport to create a seamless and efficient transit network across Chennai.
Furthermore, the partnership will focus on strengthening inclusive master planning. This involves ensuring that urban development plans cater to the needs of all residents, including those from marginalised and underserved communities. By incorporating principles of inclusivity and equity into urban planning processes, the collaboration aims to create a city that is more resilient and adaptable to the diverse needs of its population. The MoU represents a strategic alignment between CMDA and ITDP, reflecting a shared vision for a sustainable and inclusive urban future. As Chennai continues to grow and evolve, this partnership will play a crucial role in shaping the city’s infrastructure and mobility landscape.
