Chennai’s water distribution landscape is set to undergo a transformative change as the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) embarks on a pioneering initiative – the implementation of a circular water pipeline network. This ambitious project aims to connect all water sources with distribution points, ensuring equitable and uninterrupted water supply throughout the city.
According to officials, the circular pipeline system is designed to mitigate water crises, particularly in south Chennai, by facilitating the seamless distribution of water from various desalination plants once the project reaches completion. Currently, water supply relies heavily on desalination plants and reservoirs, with contingency measures such as tanker deliveries in case of supply disruptions.
A senior official from Metro Water highlighted the project’s significance in enhancing water management capabilities and meeting the rising demand for water in southern Chennai. Traditionally, water from desalination plants like Minjur primarily serves north Chennai areas. However, the circular pipeline infrastructure will enable flexible water distribution, transcending geographical boundaries and catering to the evolving needs of the entire city.
The initiative is poised to commence following an official announcement in the upcoming State assembly session, signalling a new era in Chennai’s water management paradigm. The Metro Water Board, amidst escalating water demands, has demonstrated resilience by ramping up drinking water supply to unprecedented levels, peaking at 1,075 MLD during summer.
Despite challenges such as the depletion of the Veeranam reservoir, Metro Water has ensured uninterrupted water supply by leveraging resources from Chembarambakkam reservoir and Nemmeli desalination plant. Looking ahead, the completion of the 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur by 2026 promises to further bolster Chennai’s water security.
The circular pipeline project aligns with long-term strategies to fortify Chennai’s water infrastructure, ensuring resilience in the face of future expansions, including potential extensions of Chennai corporation limits. With concerted efforts and innovative solutions like the circular pipeline network, Chennai Metro Water is poised to usher in a new era of sustainable and equitable water distribution, underscoring its commitment to serving the burgeoning needs of the city’s populace.
