Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has wielded its regulatory authority, imposing a hefty fine of Rs 25,000 on a sewer lorry caught in the act of illegally discharging sewage into open land in Karapakkam, Shollinganallur zone.
The incident, detected during a routine inspection, underscores the CMWSSB’s unwavering commitment to maintaining environmental integrity and preventing unlawful disposal of sewage. The board has issued a stern warning to lorry owners, cautioning against such unauthorised actions and signalling severe consequences for offenders.
In a statement released by the metro water board, it was revealed that the sewer lorry was apprehended while decanting sewage water from its tanker illegally onto open land at Kuppusamy Street, near KCG College, Okkiyam Maduvu, Karapakkam. Prompt action was taken, with the vehicle seized on the spot and a substantial fine levied as per regulatory protocols. Furthermore, the CMWSSB has mandated that the responsible party must settle the penalty promptly, providing requisite documentation, including copies of the vehicle’s registration certificate, insurance, permit, road tax, fitness certificate, and the driver’s license. A senior official from CMWSSB emphasised that while illegal sewage disposal has been a recurring issue in the city, the department remains resolute in its efforts to curb such violations. Numerous vehicles have been impounded in the past for similar offenses, and strict punitive measures continue to be enforced to deter future transgressions. This proactive stance by CMWSSB underscores its commitment to upholding environmental standards and ensuring the responsible management of sewage disposal practices in Chennai. Such regulatory interventions are essential to safeguard public health, preserve natural ecosystems, and maintain the overall well-being of the community.
