Chennai Metro to Add 28 New Six-Car Trains by 2028

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to enhance its Phase I network by introducing 28 new six-car trains by 2028.

This strategic move aims to alleviate congestion and improve service frequency, addressing the growing commuter demand in the city. The Phase I network, spanning 54 kilometres, currently operates with a fleet of 52 four-car trains. However, with daily ridership averaging 2.5 lakh passengers and peak-hour congestion becoming a concern, the need for additional trains has become evident. A recent consultant study recommended the procurement of 28 six-car trains to meet future demand projections for 2028. The total cost for this expansion is estimated at ₹2,820.90 crore, with funding expected from multilateral agencies.

The introduction of these six-car trains will significantly reduce train intervals. On Corridor 1 (Airport to Wimco Nagar), the frequency will decrease to three minutes, while Corridor 2 (Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount) will see intervals of 4–5 minutes. This improvement aims to replace the current arrangement where trains run every 6 to 12 minutes, often operating as short-loop services. To accommodate the new six-car trains, CMRL plans to upgrade 21 underground stations and several elevated ones. These upgrades include platform extensions and the installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) to enhance passenger safety. Additionally, depots at Koyambedu and Wimco Nagar will undergo enhancements, including the addition of new stabling lines and upgraded machinery to support the expanded fleet.

While the expansion plans are welcomed, some commuters express concerns about the timeline. “During morning peak hours, it’s so crowded near the doors that boarding or getting off is a struggle,” shared a resident-activist from Adambakkam. This feedback underscores the urgency of addressing overcrowding and improving service efficiency. CMRL’s initiative to introduce 28 new six-car trains and upgrade existing infrastructure reflects a proactive approach to meet Chennai’s growing urban mobility needs. By enhancing service frequency and capacity, CMRL aims to provide a more efficient and comfortable commuting experience for the city’s residents.
