Chennai Metro Signs Rs 48 Crore Contract To Enhance Train Door Safety

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has taken a major step towards improving commuter safety and passenger experience by awarding a ₹48.33 crore contract to a technology partner to introduce an advanced anti-drag door safety system across its Phase-1 trainsets. The upgrade, aimed at preventing accidental entrapments and enhancing operational safety, will cover all 52 trains currently operating on the Blue and Green lines.

At present, Chennai Metro’s rolling stock is equipped with automatic sliding doors fitted with obstacle detection sensors that stop closure when objects obstruct the doorway. The new system will elevate this safety standard further by detecting thinner objects such as sarees, bag straps or belts, which often go unnoticed by existing sensors. If any object remains caught between the doors as the train starts moving, the new feature will instantly activate an emergency brake and alert the train operator through the onboard system, ensuring zero drag incidents. Metro officials noted that Chennai Metro has maintained an excellent safety record since its launch, with no reported door entrapment cases. However, the authority’s decision to invest in advanced detection systems underscores a proactive approach towards public safety and future-readiness. Officials explained that the installation aligns with CMRL’s broader objective of enhancing passenger security through smart technology integration and adopting global best practices in rail safety.

This upgraded system will also be integrated into all trains being procured under Chennai Metro’s Phase-2 expansion project, which aims to make the network more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable. Experts highlighted that such technological advancements not only ensure operational safety but also contribute to reducing service delays, improving commuter confidence, and supporting the metro’s goal of becoming a greener and more people-centric transport system. In parallel with its safety initiatives, CMRL has also enhanced commuter facilities at Saidapet Metro Station by inaugurating additional passenger amenities, including new entry gates, a ticket vending office, and an excess fare collection counter on the Todd Hunter Nagar side. These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to make Chennai’s metro stations more accessible and user-friendly for diverse passenger groups.

The authority also marked the beginning of Vigilance Awareness Week 2025 with an integrity pledge ceremony at its headquarters, reaffirming its commitment to transparent operations and accountability under this year’s theme, “Vigilance: Our Shared Responsibility.” As Chennai Metro continues to expand its network, initiatives such as the anti-drag door system signal a forward-thinking approach to safety, technology, and commuter comfort — reinforcing its vision of building a sustainable, inclusive, and globally benchmarked urban transport system for the city.
