Chennai Metro Plans Major Expansion with New Trains

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to significantly enhance its services by introducing 28 new six-car trains to its Phase I network by 2028.

This expansion aims to alleviate congestion and improve service frequency, catering to the growing number of commuters in the city. Currently, the Phase I network operates with 52 four-car trains. The addition of 28 six-car trains will increase the fleet to 80, thereby reducing the waiting time between trains during peak hours. On Corridor 1 (Airport to Wimco Nagar), trains will run every 3 minutes, and on Corridor 2 (Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount), trains will arrive every 4–5 minutes, compared to the current intervals of 6 to 12 minutes.

To support the operation of these new trains, CMRL plans to upgrade 21 underground stations. These upgrades will include the installation of Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) at 19 stations, platform extensions, and other necessary modifications to accommodate the longer trains. Elevated stations such as Guindy, Alandur, Airport, and CMBT will also receive PSDs to enhance passenger safety and streamline boarding processes. In addition to station upgrades, CMRL is expanding its depot facilities at Koyambedu and Wimco Nagar. The enhancements will include the addition of new stabling lines, improved washing plants, and upgraded maintenance facilities to support the larger fleet.

The decision to procure the new trains follows a comprehensive study conducted by CMRL, which analyzed passenger traffic patterns and future demand. The study highlighted a 156% increase in ridership between January and December 2022, underscoring the need for additional trains to maintain efficient service levels. The Tamil Nadu government has approved the procurement of the 28 six-car trains at an estimated cost of ₹2,820.90 crore. Funding for the project is expected to be secured through multilateral agencies, with the Asian Development Bank being a potential source of financing.

This initiative aligns with Chennai’s broader efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion. By expanding the metro network and improving service frequency, CMRL aims to provide a reliable and efficient public transportation option for the city’s residents, contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly urban environment. As the project progresses, commuters can look forward to a more comfortable and convenient metro experience, with reduced waiting times and enhanced safety features. The expansion of Chennai Metro’s Phase I network marks a significant step towards meeting the city’s evolving transportation needs and supporting its growth as a modern, sustainable metropolis.
