Chennai Metro Halts Smart Card Issuance, Shifts Focus to NCMC

Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited (CMRL) has ceased the issuance of smart cards to commuters traversing the city’s metro network.

This decision marks a significant departure from the traditional reliance on smart card technology, as CMRL endeavours to steer passengers towards the adoption of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). Following its inception nearly a decade ago, Chennai Metro Rail services initially offered smart cards as the primary mode of fare payment, alongside token-based transactions. However, with the recent rollout of NCMC, CMRL has phased out the issuance of new smart cards, emphasising the versatility and enhanced functionalities of the unified mobility card.

According to data provided by CMRL, smart cards boasted a robust user base, with approximately 37.64 lakh transactions recorded in March alone. An official from CMRL disclosed that the discontinuation of smart card issuance took effect in November 2023, coinciding with the introduction of NCMC. Notably, existing smart card holders retain the option to recharge and utilise their cards for metro travel.

While the transition to NCMC signals a progressive step towards integrated mobility solutions, the decision has elicited mixed reactions from commuters. While some laud CMRL’s initiative to diversify ticketing options, others express dissatisfaction, citing the convenience of smart card procurement and recharge, particularly for senior citizens. Despite differing opinions among passengers, CMRL remains steadfast in its commitment to modernise fare collection systems and streamline commuter experiences. With NCMC poised to serve as a multifunctional card for both transit and retail transactions, CMRL aims to catalyse a paradigm shift towards seamless mobility solutions across Chennai’s transportation landscape.
