Chennai Metro Expands CCTV Cameras Across Stations And Parking Areas
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has initiated a major upgrade to its surveillance infrastructure by expanding CCTV coverage across its Phase I network and selected extension corridors. The move comes in response to gaps in security at station areas, particularly parking zones, and aims to enhance passenger safety across the 54-kilometre network.
Currently, approximately 3,500 CCTV cameras operate along the Phase I corridors, spanning from Washermenpet to Chennai Airport and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount, as well as the Phase I Extension from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. However, certain zones, including station parking areas and blind spots, remained unmonitored, prompting CMRL officials to increase camera deployment by nearly 25%.
The initial phase of preparatory work involves detailed surveys and cable-laying exercises at fourteen key stations, including Chennai Airport, Guindy, High Court, Shenoy Nagar, Thirumangalam, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, Ekkatuthangal, Alandur, CMBT, Ashok Nagar, and Chennai Central. Once completed, this initiative will not only replace outdated cameras but also improve video clarity and reliability, ensuring real-time monitoring for station staff and security teams.According to officials, administrative delays had previously slowed the rollout.
Tender finalisation required revised cost estimations and extensive documentation, which postponed installation. “The survey and groundwork have commenced, with full-scale installation expected to conclude by December,” a CMRL official said.Security gaps have historically led to incidents affecting passenger safety, particularly in isolated underground corridors. Women passengers, in particular, had reported feeling unsafe in poorly monitored areas. Additionally, parking lots have seen vehicle damage, helmet thefts, and fuel pilferage, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive CCTV coverage. Improved surveillance is expected to address these concerns and deter criminal activity effectively.
By modernising its security infrastructure, CMRL is taking a significant step towards creating a safer, more resilient metro network that prioritises passenger well-being. The project aligns with the broader vision of equitable, sustainable urban transport, ensuring public transit spaces are secure and well-managed.Experts note that robust CCTV networks, when coupled with active monitoring and responsive station staff, can significantly reduce crime, improve commuter confidence, and enhance operational efficiency in metropolitan transit systems. As Chennai Metro continues to expand its infrastructure and passenger services, the enhanced surveillance initiative reinforces the city’s commitment to providing a safe and technologically equipped urban mobility network, ensuring both commuter convenience and security remain central to its operations.
