In a significant move aimed at mitigating the risk of flooding during the upcoming northeast monsoon, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) announced on Monday that the five vents of the Okkiyam Maduvu waterway have been successfully cleared. This initiative comes in response to a request from the Water Resources Department (WRD), following the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Michaung in December 2023, which revealed the shortcomings in the existing flood management infrastructure.
Addressing Flood Concerns The catastrophic floods last year exposed the insufficient capacity of the Okkiyam Maduvu bridge, necessitating urgent improvements. The narrow 80-metre wide vent proved inadequate during the cyclone, leading to severe flooding in the Pallikaranai marshland and surrounding areas. As a result, CMRL has undertaken a project to widen the vent way to 200 metres and increase the vertical clearance by 1.5 metres. This is a critical step in enhancing the drainage capacity of the waterway and reducing the risk of future floods.
The clearing of the five vents marks the first phase of the larger project, which also includes the construction of a new two-lane road bridge. The design of this new bridge includes provisions for expanding it to accommodate three additional lanes on either side. Once the new structure is completed, the existing bridge, which currently constricts water flow, will be demolished. By improving the waterway and upgrading the bridge, CMRL aims to create a more robust flood prevention system for Chennai, particularly in flood-prone areas like the Pallikaranai marsh. Construction Work Progress CMRL has completed the pile work for the new two-lane bridge, an essential step in the construction process. Additionally, the cleaning of the Okkiyam Maduvu waterway has been successfully finished, ensuring that the drainage channels are clear ahead of the monsoon rains. Construction on the remaining sections of the road bridge will resume once the monsoon season has passed, with the aim of completing the project in a timely manner to provide long-term flood relief.
