Chennai Launches 145 Crore Project To Redevelop Narayanapuram Lake
Chennai’s urban landscape is set for a significant transformation as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) initiates a ₹144.69 crore redevelopment of Narayanapuram Lake in Perungudi. The project, timed ahead of the northeast monsoon, aims to enhance flood resilience, strengthen embankments, and provide public access around the waterbody.
Officials stated that the redevelopment will involve the construction of a reinforced toe wall along the lake bund, stone pitching to prevent erosion, and additional retaining walls equipped with handrails. Walking pathways paved with blocks will encircle the lake, while gates, entrance plazas, and lighting infrastructure are being installed to create a safe and accessible environment for residents.
Environmental planning has been a key focus, with tree planting and greenery along the bund, including Vetiver grass known for its soil-binding properties. Roadside hedges and dense plantations will further enhance the ecological value. The layout also includes habitat islands within the lake, creating pockets of greenery to support biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.
The project will also improve connectivity to surrounding roads including Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, Sunnambu Kolathur Main Road, and Erikkarai Salai, offering walkable spaces where previously only eroded embankments existed. Officials confirmed that the redevelopment is scheduled for completion within six months of project handover. This initiative follows the lake’s overflow incident in December 2023, which submerged surrounding areas for approximately 36 hours, disrupting power supply and damaging property. The redevelopment aims to mitigate such risks by strengthening the bund and improving water management, ensuring that monsoon inflows are safely contained while maintaining accessibility for local communities.
Experts in urban water management highlight that the project reflects Chennai’s commitment to integrating ecological restoration with sustainable urban development. By combining flood mitigation, public utility, and environmental conservation, the redevelopment serves as a model for eco-sensitive urban planning.Officials emphasised that the project balances functionality and aesthetics, providing residents with a green, accessible recreational space while addressing critical water management challenges.
The redevelopment of Narayanapuram Lake illustrates Chennai Corporation’s broader efforts to enhance urban water bodies, improve public infrastructure, and ensure climate resilience for the city’s growing population. As the project progresses, Narayanapuram Lake is expected to become a resilient, green urban landmark, supporting both biodiversity and community engagement while safeguarding Chennai against future monsoon-related challenges.
