Chennai Four Key Bus Termini Set for Rs7.5 Crore Facelift

Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is set to embark on a significant modernization drive, initiating a ₹7.5 crore project to revamp four of its aging bus termini. Ayanavaram, Thiruverkadu, Kannagi Nagar, and MMDA Colony are the first to benefit from this facelift, which aims to improve infrastructure and enhance passenger amenities across the city’s crucial public transport network. This initiative is part of a larger state government sanctioned project covering six MTC-operated termini.

The decision to renovate these four termini stems from their current dilapidated state, with MTC officials highlighting shabby seating, timekeeper rooms, and inadequate passenger and crew washroom facilities. The proposed upgrades include replacing outdated asbestos-sheet shelters with modern tensile fabric roofing, installing new seating arrangements, and comprehensively renovating timekeeper rooms. Critically, improved toilet and restroom facilities will be provided for both passengers and the bus crew, addressing long-standing deficiencies at these vital transport hubs.

Following the structural renovation, the termini will be equipped with new passenger information systems, offering real-time updates on bus arrivals and departures for enhanced convenience. This long-awaited modernization has been welcomed by commuters, particularly residents like K Dhanasekar of Thiruverkadu, who emphasized the dire need for better amenities, including proper seating, restrooms, drinking water, and mobile charging points.

While MTC initially proposed a broader revamp of nine termini costing ₹11.25 crore, the government sanctioned ₹7.5 crore for six facilities. Notably, the Avadi and T Nagar termini will be modernized by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), and the Tiruvottiyur terminus will be handled by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), indicating a collaborative effort to upgrade Chennai’s public transport infrastructure for a better commuter experience.
