Chennai Egmore Station Overhaul Causes Temporary Train Changes

Southern Railway has announced temporary changes to train operations at Chennai Egmore station from June 20 to August 18, 2025, to facilitate ongoing platform upgrades. These adjustments are part of a broader redevelopment plan aimed at modernising the station’s infrastructure.

Several trains, including the Chennai Egmore–Madurai Tejas Express, Kollam Express, Mannargudi Mannai Express, Tiruchendur Express, and Guruvayur Express, will temporarily operate from Tambaram station instead of their usual terminus at Chennai Egmore. Additionally, the Charminar Express, which typically runs between Tambaram and Hyderabad, will shift its operations to start and end at Chennai Beach during this period. Passengers are advised to verify train schedules and departure points before travel to avoid inconvenience. The redevelopment project, estimated at ₹734.91 crore, includes the construction of a new G+3 terminal building on both the Gandhi-Irwin and Poonamallee High Road sides, multi-level car parking facilities, and enhanced passenger amenities such as lifts, escalators, and improved concourse areas. The project is expected to be completed within 36 months .

These upgrades are part of Southern Railway’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure and improving passenger facilities. While the temporary schedule changes may cause some inconvenience, they are deemed necessary to accommodate the ongoing redevelopment work. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay updated on the latest schedule information.
