Chennai Corporation Sets October 2025 Deadline for Stormwater Drain Links
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has outlined a definitive plan to address the long-standing issue of missing stormwater drain (SWD) links. Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran announced that the civic body will begin identifying the gaps in the existing drainage network by January 2025, with the aim of completing the project within ten months, by October 2025. This timeline has been set to ensure preparedness before the onset of the Northeast monsoon in 2025. The initiative also includes efforts to reduce reliance on water-pumping systems during continuous heavy rainfall.
Over the past months, practical challenges have hindered immediate resolutions, especially during heavy rains. Residents have been urged to report missing drain links, enabling the GCC to prioritise and address these gaps. However, concerns remain unaddressed in critical areas like Adhi Nagar in Perungudi Zone and Sri Sai Nagar in Sholinganallur Zone. Community leaders, including A. Francis and D. Neelakannan, have voiced grievances regarding outdated drainage systems and zones still vulnerable to waterlogging. Though some areas, like Madhavaram Zone, have experienced reduced inundation compared to previous years, the lack of SWD connections remains a pressing issue.
From a sustainability perspective, the absence of proper stormwater infrastructure not only exacerbates urban flooding but also limits water conservation efforts. Missing links to key water bodies such as Perumbakkam marshland and Aavin Pond highlight the need for a cohesive drainage system that directs rainwater to reservoirs, mitigating wastage and recharging groundwater. Integrating ecological planning with infrastructural development could transform Chennai’s approach to managing monsoonal challenges.
Addressing stormwater infrastructure gaps is a civic priority for Chennai. While the GCC’s proposed measures promise progress, residents await concrete actions and timely completion. A robust and sustainable SWD network will not only prevent flooding but also enhance Chennai’s urban resilience in the face of growing environmental challenges.
