Madhya Pradesh on Red Alert as Heavy Rains Lash State Yellow Alert for Delhi Rain Orange Alerts Across India
Chennai is set to witness a mix of light to moderate rainfall and humid weather over the next few days, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With the Southwest Monsoon gaining pace and a cyclonic circulation active over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, much of Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions are expected to experience scattered rain accompanied by high temperatures and gusty winds.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, temperatures in the city will hover between 28°C and 35°C, with humidity levels around 70%, making for an uncomfortable stretch of hot, sticky days. Cloudy skies will dominate, and rain spells may occur intermittently, particularly in the evenings.
Rainfall is forecast to continue till July 12, with varying intensities across different regions. Districts likely to receive rain include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and the Western Ghats, as well as the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal. Some of these areas may also witness thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 40 kmph.
The weather department attributes the current spell to a cyclonic circulation situated over the South Andaman Sea and Southeast Bay of Bengal. This system is influencing not just Tamil Nadu but also parts of Odisha, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Telangana, bringing widespread moisture and instability to the region.
In light of these conditions, the IMD has issued advisories for fishermen and coastal communities, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea during this period. Residents are also advised to stay hydrated, wear light, breathable clothing, and avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours to reduce heat-related risks.
While the rainfall may provide temporary relief from the summer heat, Chennaiites can expect the humidity to persist, making weather conditions moderately uncomfortable through the week.
