Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is embarking on an ambitious beach restoration project, targeting three key coastal areas: Thiruvottiyur, Kasimedu, and Injambakkam to Akkarai stretch.
The initiative, under scrutiny by the Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA), is poised to undergo rigorous evaluation towards achieving coveted Blue Flag certification, in tandem with the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM). Addressing pressing concerns such as oil leakage, sewage, and open defecation, CMDA, under the astute guidance of Supriya Sahu, Environment Department Secretary, is diligently crafting a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR). This meticulous approach aims to devise holistic solutions, integrating social, environmental, and hydrological perspectives.
CMDA’s strategic blueprint encompasses multifaceted amenities including pedestrian footpaths, toilets, landscaping, recreational zones, and parking facilities, aligning with the stringent criteria for Blue Flag accreditation. Notably, CMDA has already met 20 to 30 prerequisites for the certification, as confirmed by a CMDA official. As part of the rigorous compliance process, water sampling tests, implementation of stray dog prohibition measures, establishment of a beach management committee, and formulation of a robust solid waste management policy are underway. Furthermore, CMDA, in response to TNSCZMA’s directive, is exploring avenues to create alternative livelihood opportunities for local communities adjacent to the beaches. Commencing restoration efforts in June, CMDA is poised to concurrently pursue Blue Flag accreditation, signifying a harmonious convergence of environmental stewardship and sustainable development along Chennai’s pristine coastline.
