Chennai International Airport has introduced an innovative approach to mitigate bird strikes by replacing traditional firecracker-based deterrents with handheld ‘thunder booms’. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has procured 30 handheld thunder boom devices, each emitting loud, thunder-like sounds between 80 and 120 decibels. Unlike the previously used zone guns, these devices are lightweight (approximately 4 kg), portable, and can be operated by a single person. They utilize replaceable gas cartridges, each capable of delivering up to 70 shots before requiring replacement. This mobility allows for targeted deterrence in specific areas, reducing the risk of birds becoming habituated to the noise . The transition from firecrackers to thunder booms addresses several critical issues. Firecrackers, while effective in startling birds, have posed significant fire hazards and contributed to environmental pollution. In 2015, a minor blaze at the airport was caused by crackers igniting a grass patch near the runway, leading to flight delays and safety concerns . The new devices eliminate these risks, providing a safer and more sustainable solution.
