Chengalpattu bus terminus near completion aims to boost city infrastructure

The Chengalpattu district is poised for a significant transformation in public transportation infrastructure, with the imminent completion of a ₹100 crore bus terminus.

This state-of-the-art facility, constructed by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), is set to be inaugurated before the Deepavali festival, promising to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance commuter experience in the region. Situated on a sprawling 9.95-acre site near the Chengalpattu court, the terminus is designed to accommodate 41 buses simultaneously across its ground and first floors. Beyond its primary function as a transit hub, the facility will feature 35 commercial shops, an air-conditioned waiting hall, and modern sanitation amenities. A dedicated parking area will provide space for 55 cars and 325 two-wheelers, catering to the needs of daily commuters and visitors alike. Plans are also underway to integrate a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus depot within the premises, further enhancing the operational efficiency of the region’s public transport network.

The strategic location of the new terminus is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road, a major arterial route that currently experiences heavy vehicular flow. By relocating the existing bus stop from the congested junction to this modern facility, authorities aim to streamline traffic movement and improve road safety in the area.

During a recent inspection of the construction site, Chengalpattu District Collector accompanied by CMDA officer and other district officials, expressed confidence in meeting the project’s timeline. They affirmed that construction work is on track for completion by September, ensuring the terminus will be operational for public use ahead of the Deepavali festivities.

This development aligns with broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and equitable urban growth. By investing in such large-scale projects, the state aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents, promote eco-friendly transportation options, and stimulate economic activity through improved connectivity.

The Chengalpattu bus terminus stands as a testament to the state’s vision for a more organized and efficient public transportation system. Its completion is anticipated to not only ease daily commutes but also to serve as a catalyst for further infrastructural advancements in the region.
