Centre Approves Rs 309 Crore For Kavach Safety System In NCR

Lucknow’s railway network is set for a significant safety overhaul, with the central government approving over ₹309 crore for the installation of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system across 790 kilometres in the North Central Railway (NCR) zone. The initiative forms part of a nationwide programme to integrate Kavach with a communication backbone through advanced LTE technology across remaining railway routes.

Officials from the rail infrastructure department confirmed that the Kavach rollout has been included in the 2024–25 Works, Machinery and Rolling Stock Programme, signalling the government’s intent to fast-track railway safety modernisation. The system aims to prevent collisions, enforce speed restrictions, and improve operational efficiency, offering both passenger and freight trains an added layer of security. The NCR zone, a critical link in India’s high-density rail corridor, handles some of the nation’s busiest passenger and freight traffic. Its upgrade with Kavach is expected to reduce accident risks, streamline operations, and provide punctual, safer services. Experts note that the technology uses GPS-based tracking, radio communication, and automatic braking to avert human error one of the leading causes of rail mishaps.

Beyond safety, the introduction of Kavach is being seen as a strategic move towards sustainable urban and intercity transport. Railway planners are emphasising that fewer accidents and operational delays lead to reduced fuel wastage and more energy-efficient timetables, which aligns with India’s vision of developing net-zero carbon transport systems. By cutting down on unplanned halts and optimising speeds, trains will consume less energy and emit fewer greenhouse gases. The implementation in the NCR zone is also likely to set a precedent for extending Kavach coverage across the entire Indian Railways network. This will ensure that even remote and semi-urban areas benefit from the same safety standards as metropolitan regions. Industry experts argue that such projects strengthen public confidence in rail travel and could encourage a shift from road to rail, further lowering the carbon footprint of passenger mobility.

Railway authorities have hinted that the installation process will be accompanied by training programmes for operational and maintenance staff to ensure seamless integration into existing systems. Additionally, the LTE-based communication upgrade will allow for faster data transmission between trains and control centres, enabling quicker response times in emergencies. While the rollout will initially focus on high-priority sections within the NCR zone, future phases will likely target other zones with dense traffic and complex operational requirements. The Kavach system’s success in the NCR could pave the way for widespread adoption, positioning India as a leader in indigenous rail safety technology. The funding approval marks a decisive step towards safer, more reliable, and eco-conscious rail transport a vision that blends technological innovation with sustainable mobility goals for the country.
