Central Railway to Develop New Terminus at Godhni Station to Enhance Connectivity and Ease Congestion in Nagpur
Nagpur’s railway network, the Central Railway (CR) has announced plans to develop a new railway terminus at Godhni station. This move, which is part of a broader modernization project under the central government’s ‘Amrut Bharat’ scheme, aims to enhance passenger capacity and improve train operations in the region.
Nagpur has long been a key railway hub, but with increasing demand and passenger traffic, the existing infrastructure has struggled to keep pace. The new terminus at Godhni is expected to play a significant role in relieving congestion at the city’s other stations, ensuring smoother operations and better facilities for both passengers and freight services. At a recent press conference, senior officials from the Central Railway shared more details about the project, revealing that it is one of ten new terminals planned across Maharashtra. Godhni will also be one of the stations benefiting from substantial upgrades as part of this initiative. The project aims to address growing demand and to bolster the capacity of the Nagpur division.
In addition to the new terminus, four new platforms are under construction at Ajni railway station. These efforts are part of a comprehensive plan to modernise and increase the capacity of Nagpur’s railway network. A survey is currently underway for the Godhni terminus, which will be a key component of the overall strategy to handle the rising volume of passengers and freight in the region. Moreover, Central Railway officials announced that significant progress has been made in the electrification and track expansion projects. The third and fourth lines between Godhni and Chichonda have already been commissioned, marking an important milestone in improving the connectivity of the Itarsi section. However, the remaining stretch in the ghat section will require the construction of viaducts, and these are currently in the design phase.
On the same day, Dharam Veer Meena, General Manager of Central Railway, conducted a safety inspection of the Ballarshah-Sewagram section of the Nagpur Division. During his inspection, Meena confirmed that CR would become the first zone in Indian Railways to implement KAVACH, a state-of-the-art train collision avoidance system, across its entire 3,000 km network. This move is expected to significantly enhance safety on the tracks and reduce the risk of accidents. Meena’s visit also included a detailed review of key facilities, including the route relay interlocking cabin, the CCTV control room, and various passenger amenities at Ballarshah station. He engaged with railway employees, freight customers, and local leaders, including Chandrapur MLA Kishor Jorgewar and MLC Sudhakar Adbale, to discuss ongoing projects and safety improvements.
At the same time, Meena emphasised the importance of improving the safety, maintenance, and quality of the railway infrastructure, particularly in Nagpur. His visit underscores the commitment of the Central Railway to modernising its facilities and ensuring a safer and more efficient railway network for both passengers and freight customers. As the projects unfold, the new Godhni terminus, along with other key infrastructure improvements, promises to bring substantial relief to Nagpur’s growing railway needs. The focus on modernisation, coupled with advanced safety measures like KAVACH, signals a positive shift towards better train operations and a safer, more reliable travel experience for all.
