Mumbai commuters are set to experience service disruptions this weekend as Central Railway schedules a special block at Kanjurmarg station to dismantle the old foot overbridge (FOB) truss girders. The maintenance operation, crucial for passenger safety and infrastructure upkeep, will affect multiple local train services on Saturday midnight to Sunday 5 am, impacting the UP and DOWN Slow, Fast, and 5th and 6th lines, with exceptions at Vikhroli and Mulund stations.
The project involves removing the ageing ‘N-type’ truss girders at the Kalyan end of the FOB using a 100-metric tonne road crane. The operation, planned between Vikhroli and Bhandup stations along the Kurla-Kalyan section, aims to improve commuter safety and enable future infrastructure upgrades. Central Railway officials emphasised that such maintenance works are critical for ensuring the durability and operational safety of station facilities. As a result of the block, several local train services will either be cancelled or short-terminated. Key cancellations include the CSMT-Thane local departing Saturday 11.38 pm, Thane-Kurla local at 11.40 pm, and the CSMT-Thane local departing 12.24 am Sunday. Other services will originate or terminate from alternate stations, while some trains will be diverted to parallel lines, bypassing stations like Vidyavihar, Kanjurmarg, and Nahur.
Central Railway has also announced a mega block on the main line on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 8 am to 1.30 pm, to facilitate broader engineering and maintenance operations. This block will primarily affect the 5th and 6th tracks between Vidyavihar and Thane stations. Long-distance Mail and Express trains, including the Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express, Patna-LTT Express, and Solapur-CSMT Vande Bharat Express, will be diverted, with expected delays ranging from 10 to 15 minutes. Officials confirmed that real-time coordination with train controllers and local police is being implemented to manage commuter flow and mitigate disruptions. Diversions and rescheduling are designed to minimise inconvenience, while ensuring that infrastructure upgrades are carried out safely and efficiently.
Experts emphasised that while temporary commuter inconvenience is unavoidable, such initiatives are critical for long-term urban mobility and public safety. The dismantling of outdated structures and reinforcement of station facilities aligns with broader goals of sustainable, efficient, and safe public transport infrastructure in Mumbai. Passengers are urged to plan their journeys in advance, check updated timetables, and use alternate routes where possible. Central Railway reiterated that these operations are part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining resilient urban transport systems capable of handling growing commuter demands while adhering to safety and environmental standards.
