The Central Railway (CR) has scheduled a critical night block at Kanjurmarg station, affecting several Mumbai suburban train services, as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades to enhance commuter safety and station efficiency. The maintenance window, set for the night of February 14-15, 2026, will see traffic and power disruptions aimed at installing new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) girders across the station’s Kalyan end.
The block, running from 1:05 am to 4:35 am, covers the rail section between Vikhroli and Mulund, excluding both stations. Railway officials have confirmed that this maintenance operation is essential for the deployment of four new girders, each six metres wide, to support the new FOB. The work involves heavy machinery, including road cranes, and will be executed without compromising suburban train operations as far as operationally possible. Commuters on the affected night will experience train cancellations and diversions. The CSMT-Thane local (T-1) departing at 12:24 am and the Thane-CSMT local (T-2) departing at 4:04 am will be suspended during the maintenance window. Additionally, the CSMT-Karjat local (S-1) leaving at 12:12 am will be rerouted along the down fast line between Matunga and Mulund, bypassing Vidyavihar, Kanjurmarg, and Nahur stations.
Industry experts highlight that such planned interventions, though disruptive, are critical for long-term commuter safety and station capacity. A senior official noted that the installation of modern FOBs not only facilitates smoother passenger flow but also supports Mumbai’s broader efforts to upgrade suburban transport infrastructure in line with sustainable urban mobility goals. The CR emphasised that passengers should plan their journeys accordingly, acknowledging the temporary inconvenience. Public communication and advance notifications are being deployed to minimise disruption and ensure commuter awareness. These measures reflect an increasing focus on people-first planning, balancing operational efficiency with passenger convenience.
Separately, CR has cancelled a previously scheduled midnight block at Kharbao station for the commissioning of new UP and DOWN goods lines under the DFCCIL project. Officials indicated that this adjustment is part of broader efforts to optimise maintenance scheduling across the network and reduce unnecessary service disruptions. Urban planners and railway analysts underscore that Mumbai’s suburban network faces escalating passenger volumes, making systematic upgrades such as these night blocks unavoidable. Investments in structural enhancements, including FOB installations, are critical to ensuring resilient, efficient, and safe commuter systems that can handle future urban growth while reducing travel bottlenecks.
While temporary service interruptions can affect early-morning and late-night travellers, the long-term benefits of enhanced station infrastructure, improved accessibility, and passenger safety are expected to outweigh short-term inconveniences. The CR has committed to publishing detailed updates for passengers ahead of each maintenance activity.
