Central Railway launches special ticket-checking drive for first-class compartments

Central Railway has launched a special ticket-checking initiative targeting first-class compartments of Mumbai’s suburban local trains. The drive, commencing on June 16, 2025, aims to address growing concerns over unauthorized travel and overcrowding in these premium coaches. The initiative comes in response to increasing complaints from genuine commuters about unauthorized passengers occupying first-class compartments, leading to discomfort and safety concerns.

With over 40 lakh daily passengers relying on the suburban rail network, maintaining the integrity of first-class services has become imperative. Central Railway’s special ticket-checking squads will conduct inspections during peak commuting hours, focusing on first-class compartments. Passengers found without valid tickets or season passes will face on-the-spot penalties. In cases where fines are not paid immediately, defaulters will be handed over to station-based ticket-checking staff at the next stop, with potential legal action to follow.

To bolster enforcement and safety, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel will accompany ticket-checking squads during these inspections. These joint teams will conduct end-to-end checks across various suburban trains on a rotational basis, ensuring comprehensive coverage and deterrence against fare evasion. The primary objective of this drive is to protect the rights of genuine first-class commuters and reinforce fare integrity across the suburban rail network. By targeting unauthorized travel, Central Railway aims to enhance the comfort and safety of passengers who have paid for premium services.

Central Railway has appealed to all commuters to carry valid tickets or season passes and cooperate with officials during the checks. This initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain a smoother and more equitable journey for all passengers, promoting fairness and discipline within the railway system. With the increased ridership in first-class compartments, the need for stringent enforcement has become more pressing. The revised fare structure has made first-class travel more accessible, but it has also led to overcrowding and unauthorized occupancy. Central Railway’s proactive approach aims to address these challenges and ensure that premium services remain exclusive for those who have rightfully paid for them.

As the special ticket-checking drive unfolds, commuters are urged to adhere to ticketing norms and support the railway’s efforts in maintaining a disciplined and comfortable travel environment. The success of this initiative will depend on collective cooperation and a shared commitment to upholding the integrity of Mumbai’s suburban rail services.
