Central Railway in Mumbai has announced a series of special power blocks on the Panvel-Kalamboli section from 24 to 31 December 2025, aimed at facilitating key infrastructure works at one of the city’s busiest suburban corridors. The blocks will support removal of infringements at the Panvel-Kalamboli Coaching Complex, relocation of track points, and erection of new footbridge girders and steel columns.
These works are critical for improving operational efficiency and passenger safety at Panvel station, a junction serving both long-distance and suburban trains. The power blocks will affect multiple lines, including Up and Down Mail lines, Loop lines, Karjat lines, and Engine reversal tracks, alongside platforms six and seven. Railway authorities have provided detailed schedules for affected trains. The Mangaluru Jn-CSMT Express will face daily delays of 20–30 minutes at Apta, while the CSMT-Karmali Express will be regulated at Kalamboli for over an hour on specific days. The LTT-Madgaon Express and several Ernakulam-bound trains will experience rescheduling of departures at key stations such as Somatane and Jite. Additionally, the Daund-Gwalior Express on 28–29 December will be rerouted via Karjat-Kalyan-Bhiwandi Road, with a temporary halt shift to Kalyan instead of Panvel.
Officials have highlighted that the disruptions, although temporary, are necessary to modernise Panvel station and enhance the suburban network’s capacity. “The planned work will significantly improve train handling capabilities and commuter safety over the long term,” a senior railway official said. Commuters are advised to plan travel accordingly and make use of alternative suburban services or temporary bus arrangements deployed by local authorities. Industry experts note that while such operational blocks may cause short-term inconvenience, they are essential for achieving a more sustainable and resilient urban transport network in Mumbai.
The Panvel-Kalamboli corridor is a vital artery for both daily commuters and long-distance travellers, and these upgrades reflect Central Railway’s broader strategy to modernise infrastructure while accommodating growing demand. The works also align with Urban Acres’ focus on sustainable mobility, as improved rail capacity reduces reliance on road transport and lowers the city’s carbon footprint. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated via official railway notifications to minimise inconvenience. Once completed, the enhancements will support safer, more efficient operations and reinforce Mumbai’s position as a hub of modern, sustainable suburban mobility.
