Central Railway Announces Night Traffic And Power Block For August 9-10

Kalyan and surrounding stretches of the Central Railway network will see major disruptions in both long-distance and suburban train operations overnight on August 9–10, as the Mumbai Division carries out an intensive traffic and power block for critical infrastructure upgrades. The planned engineering works will involve the installation and removal of heavy steel girders, temporarily halting train services and forcing diversions, cancellations, and short terminations.

According to officials, the block will be undertaken to launch four steel girders for the Lokgram Foot Over Bridge at Kalyan and to de-launch girders of a proposed Road Over Bridge between Ambarnath and Badlapur. These works will require heavy-duty cranes — including a 140-tonne railway crane and a 650-tonne road crane — to operate through the night, necessitating full closure of specific rail corridors. The block will commence at 12.10 am on August 10 and continue until 6.55 am, affecting the up and down slow lines between Thakurli and Kalyan, and the down fast line between Dombivli and Kalyan. Additionally, a shadow block will be in place between Ambarnath and Badlapur from 1.15 am to 4.15 am.

As a result, several long-distance mail and express trains will be diverted via alternate routes such as the Diva–Kalyan fifth line or the Karjat–Panvel–Diva corridor, with special halts at Panvel and Thane for passengers unable to board or alight at Kalyan. Others will face regulated timings at intermediate stations to accommodate the work schedule. The suburban network, which carries lakhs of commuters daily, will bear a substantial brunt of the disruption. On the night of August 9, 21 suburban services will be cancelled, and on the morning of August 10, 27 services will not run. Several trains will be short-terminated at stations such as Kurla, Thane, Titwala, and Ambarnath, while others will originate from these points instead of their regular starting stations.

Officials have clarified that despite the extensive disruptions, special services will be run between unaffected sections such as CSMT–Dombivli, Ambarnath–Karjat, and Titwala–Asangaon to maintain limited connectivity during the block. They have also confirmed that no daytime mega block will be operated on August 10 on the main and harbour lines, minimising inconvenience for Sunday commuters. Railway authorities emphasised that the overnight block is essential to upgrade passenger facilities and improve long-term safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency. The works are also in line with the larger push towards sustainable and inclusive urban infrastructure, as improved station access reduces congestion and supports environmentally responsible commuting.

Passengers are advised to check the latest train schedules, use alternative transport where possible, and plan their journeys accordingly. While the overnight disruption is likely to affect thousands, officials maintain that the benefits of enhanced infrastructure will far outweigh the temporary inconvenience.
