Bombay High Court has granted permission to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to proceed with the construction of a six-lane cable-stayed bridge over the Oshiwara Creek.
This decision aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Millat Nagar Road. The court’s directive to the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) to allow the project underscores its importance as a public utility. The bridge, approximately 500 metres in length and estimated to cost ₹418.35 crore, is expected to serve as a critical alternative route for commuters, particularly those traveling from Andheri Lokhandwala, thereby easing the burden on the congested New Link Road.
The BMC has committed to compensating for the environmental impact by planting 444 mangroves to offset the felling of 31 mangroves required for the project. This commitment aligns with the city’s broader goals of sustainable and eco-friendly urban development. The bridge’s construction, approved by the BMC in late 2022, is projected to be completed within four years. However, the project faces challenges, notably the relocation of approximately 2,500 families residing in Bhagat Singh Nagar. The BMC plans to address this issue through a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy, ensuring minimal disruption to the affected communities.
The court’s approval follows a precedent set by a 2018 order mandating prior approval for any construction in mangrove areas or their buffer zones. Despite opposition from environmental groups, the court recognized the bridge’s significance in improving traffic management and connectivity in underdeveloped areas. This project represents a step forward in Mumbai’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure while balancing environmental considerations. The BMC’s commitment to compensatory afforestation and sustainable development practices reflects a growing emphasis on creating eco-friendly and equitable urban spaces.
As Mumbai continues to evolve, projects like the Oshiwara Creek bridge exemplify the city’s dedication to addressing infrastructural challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions.
