BMC’s Ambitious ₹1,000 Crore Green Space Project Along Mumbai’s Coastal Road

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to implement a visionary project that promises to add 700 acres of lush green spaces along the city’s iconic Coastal Road. Spearheaded by acclaimed architect Hafeez Contractor, the ₹1,000 crore initiative aims to integrate recreational and ecological elements from Worli to Colaba, revitalizing Mumbai’s public amenities.

The BMC’s ambitious plan entails developing a Central Public Park encompassing 120 acres from the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and an additional 175 acres reclaimed from the Mumbai Coastal Road. Scheduled to commence post-monsoon, the project’s tender for the coastal area’s development is slated for release next month, with an anticipated completion by December 2025. Central to the proposal is the creation of three distinct zones within the Coastal Road’s 7.5 km promenade Green Shore, Nature Cove, and Park Line. These zones will feature Miyawaki forests, musical fountains, and topiary gardens, catering to diverse recreational needs while enhancing environmental sustainability.

The Architect, entrusted by BMC to lead the project’s master planning, emphasized the integration of connectivity solutions. This includes constructing an underpass to establish a direct link from the Racecourse land to the Coastal Road via Haji Ali. Additionally, two spiral walkway ramps will connect prominent landmarks like Priyadarshini Park, Kamala Nehru Park, and Girgaon Chowpatty, seamlessly blending with Marine Drive to Nariman Point. A pivotal aspect of the design addresses challenges at Haji Ali Dargah, where local fishing activities obstruct direct connectivity. Proposed solutions include elevated cycling and jogging tracks positioned 20 feet above ground level, ensuring uninterrupted pathways for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Acknowledging the project’s significance, Contractor stated, “The comprehensive proposal has been submitted for approval to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.” Once approved, the initiative promises to not only enhance Mumbai’s green cover but also establish a model for sustainable urban development amidst burgeoning infrastructure demands.
