BMC Unveils 1,000 LED Street Light Project in salt lake

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has embarked on a transformative project to bolster street lighting infrastructure across Salt Lake with the installation of 1,000 state-of-the-art LED street lights.

This initiative, backed by a recent Rs 2.9 crore allocation from the state government’s green cities mission, aims to replace conventional lighting systems with energy-efficient alternatives throughout BMC wards 29 to 41, encompassing Salt Lake, and wards 1 to 7 in the vicinity of Rajarhat-Gopalpur near the airport. The decision to implement LED technology underscores BMC’s commitment to sustainability and urban enhancement, aligning with global trends towards eco-friendly urban planning. Of the total 1,000 LED lights slated for installation, 500 will feature high-capacity 120-watt LED panels, while the remaining 500 will be equipped with 70-watt panels. The BMC has initiated the procurement process, inviting bids from reputed suppliers to ensure the project’s technical integrity and efficiency.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the current street lighting infrastructure, BMC Mayor Krishna Chakraborty highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve operational issues. “We’ve identified deficiencies in certain areas of Salt Lake and are actively addressing them. With 5,000 lights already procured using internal funds and an additional 1,000 lights set for procurement, we are committed to enhancing public safety and civic amenities,” stated Mayor Chakraborty. Salt Lake currently benefits from approximately 30,000 LED street lights, contributing significantly to energy conservation and improved visibility across the municipality. The forthcoming installation of 1,000 additional LED lights is expected to further augment these benefits, reducing energy consumption, extending operational lifespans, and minimizing maintenance costs associated with traditional lighting systems. The transition to LED technology not only supports BMC’s environmental sustainability goals but also aims to enhance urban aesthetics and promote safer public spaces. Scheduled to commence next month, the installation phase will address existing lighting deficiencies and ensure optimal illumination in Salt Lake and surrounding areas. This initiative represents a pivotal step towards modernizing urban infrastructure, fostering a cleaner and greener environment, and meeting the evolving needs of residents and businesses alike.
