BMC To Resume Concretisation On 574 Roads Spanning 156 Kilometres After Monsoon

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to restart its massive road concretisation drive on 574 partially completed roads covering 156.74 kilometres, following the monsoon-induced pause. With a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Mumbai Traffic Police in place, civic officials have scheduled the resumption for early October, aiming to complete the project before the end of 2025, in line with directives from the state government.

The Rs 17,000 crore initiative, paused from June to September due to heavy monsoon rains, has so far seen nearly half of its planned roads concretised. Phase 1, encompassing 186 km across 771 roads, has achieved approximately 49% completion, while Phase 2, spanning 208.70 km across 776 roads, is nearing 64% completion. The remaining stretches, once finalised, are expected to significantly improve urban mobility and reduce maintenance-related disruptions. A senior civic official explained that the BMC had requested traffic NOCs to ensure smooth execution across densely populated areas. “We have received approvals for all 574 roads that were partially completed before the monsoon. Work will resume by the second week of October, with priority given to completing these sections before year-end,” the official said, highlighting the administration’s commitment to citizen convenience and operational efficiency.

Recent high-level directives emphasise citizen involvement in road prioritisation. Authorities have instructed that no fresh digging will be allowed without specific local demand and consultation with elected representatives. Residents can also register complaints through a public platform, helping authorities track utility damages, monitor road conditions, and enforce accountability on contractors responsible for lapses. The project spans 2,121 roads citywide, covering 698.73 km. The distribution includes 360 roads in the island city, 216 roads covering 64.06 km in the western suburbs, and 200 roads spanning 52.33 km in the eastern suburbs. While the full concretisation drive is projected for completion by May 2027, the current resumption targets roads critical for connectivity and urban mobility.

Civic officials have also integrated modern monitoring tools to improve project transparency. Damages to utilities such as water pipelines, power connections, and sewer lines are to be uploaded on a dedicated dashboard, enabling prompt redressal and ensuring contractors face penalties for non-compliance. Experts say this approach not only streamlines construction but also aligns with sustainable urban planning by reducing repeated excavation and associated carbon emissions. With monsoon disruptions behind, the BMC’s renewed push on road concretisation represents a key step in enhancing Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, alleviating traffic congestion, and improving safety for commuters. By combining technology, citizen feedback, and regulatory oversight, the civic administration aims to deliver a more resilient, eco-conscious, and efficient urban road network.
