BMC To Construct Rs 418 Crore Cable Stayed Bridge Connecting Goregaon And Oshiwara

Mumbai is set to witness a significant boost in urban connectivity as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) embarks on a ₹418-crore cable-stayed bridge project connecting Goregaon and Oshiwara across the Goregaon Creek. Scheduled to commence in November 2025, the ambitious infrastructure initiative is expected to be completed by October 2028, promising a transformative impact on traffic movement in Andheri and surrounding areas.

Designed to relieve congestion on critical arterial roads such as S V Road and Link Road, the bridge will span 542 metres along the 36.6-metre-wide DP Road corridor. The structure will seamlessly link Link Road with Bhagat Singh Nagar, offering commuters a faster and more direct route across Goregaon Creek while providing access to key localities including Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala, and Goregaon. A 238-metre cable-stayed section will form the core of the six-lane structure, featuring three lanes in each direction, a 0.45-metre median, and 1.5-metre-wide utility corridors on either side of the carriageways. Civic officials highlighted that the cable-stayed design was chosen to minimise environmental impact, protect mangrove ecosystems, and maintain clear waterways, while also providing an aesthetically appealing addition to the cityscape.

The project has faced delays over the past three years due to stringent environmental and regulatory approvals, including clearance from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority for work near protected mangroves. The final High Court approval now clears the path for construction, with early groundwork and mangrove protection measures already in motion. Officials emphasised that the bridge aligns with Mumbai’s broader goals of sustainable urban development, aiming to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, and promote eco-friendly transport corridors. The structure is expected to support not just vehicular movement but also enhanced public transport and pedestrian pathways along the dedicated utility corridors, reflecting a people-centric approach to infrastructure planning.

Construction will be carried out over a period of 36 months, excluding monsoon months, and the BMC has assured that environmental safeguards will be rigorously enforced throughout the project. Once completed, the bridge is projected to significantly reduce travel time between Goregaon and Oshiwara, relieve pressure on existing road networks, and contribute to a more sustainable urban mobility model in Mumbai. The bridge marks a strategic investment in the city’s transport infrastructure, balancing urban development with ecological preservation, while signalling Mumbai’s commitment to modern, resilient, and inclusive city planning.
