BMC To Build 805 Crore Cable Stayed Flyover Connecting Byculla And JJ Flyover

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans for a Rs 805-crore cable-stayed flyover connecting Byculla’s Y-Bridge to the JJ Flyover. The proposed 850-metre structure is expected to significantly improve vehicular movement between the eastern suburbs and the island city while reducing bottlenecks in Byculla, Nagpada, and Mazgaon.

Officials from the civic body confirmed that tenders have been floated for the project, which will be fully funded and executed by the BMC. The modern flyover will form a crucial link in Mumbai’s central traffic network, connecting the existing Y-Bridge near the Fire Brigade headquarters to the JJ Flyover ramp. Two additional arms will extend towards the Olivant Bridge in Mazgaon, ensuring direct connectivity to both the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). Experts have said that this new connection will not only help in decongesting the Eastern Express Highway but also streamline traffic flow across multiple adjoining zones. The flyover will bypass the chronically jammed junctions near Saboo Siddik Polytechnic College and Richardson and Cruddas, which currently act as choke points during peak hours.

The project will be executed jointly by the BMC and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC). The existing Y-Bridge, which has been a part of Mumbai’s transport heritage since 1922, was declared structurally unsound after an official assessment. The new design will rebuild the structure as a cable-stayed bridge, which provides enhanced durability, reduced maintenance requirements, and faster completion timelines. According to civic engineers, the entire flyover will be constructed using stainless steel, a material that offers better longevity and reduced corrosion compared to traditional reinforced concrete. “All upcoming civic bridges are being designed in stainless steel to ensure quicker assembly, greater structural stability, and longer service life,” a senior official said.

Preliminary cost estimates have placed the total project expenditure at Rs 805.15 crore. Once the tendering process concludes, construction is expected to begin immediately, with a target completion period of 18 months, excluding the monsoon season. The first phase of the Y-Bridge reconstruction is already in progress and scheduled for completion by March 2026. Urban planners and infrastructure experts view the project as a transformative intervention in south Mumbai’s traffic ecosystem. By introducing a sustainable, future-ready design, the city aims to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and promote efficient mobility — key pillars of its long-term commitment to building an inclusive, low-emission, and resilient urban transport network.
