BMC Team Assists Kolhapur Flood Cleanup

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dispatched a specialised team to assist in cleaning the city’s storm water drains. Kolhapur, located in southern Maharashtra, has been grappling with heavy rainfall and consequent flooding over the past few days. The BMC’s intervention aims to alleviate the situation and prevent further waterlogging issues.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, a contingent of civic officials, equipped with two suction-cum-jetting machines with recycling capabilities, has been sent to Kolhapur. This assistance follows a request from Kolhapur Municipal Corporation commissioner Rahul Rokade. The BMC’s team includes vehicle drivers, technicians, and labourers, all geared to support the local efforts in managing the flood crisis. The BMC team, led by Junior Engineer Akash Rainak, arrived in Kolhapur on July 31 and commenced operations in the Shahupuri area. The presence of these specialised machines is expected to expedite the cleaning process, significantly reducing the risk of prolonged waterlogging and associated health hazards.

This intervention is not unprecedented; the BMC has a history of aiding Kolhapur during similar crises. In 2019 and 2021, Mumbai’s civic body provided critical assistance during severe flooding events, underscoring the strong cooperative relationship between the two municipal corporations. The current flood situation in Kolhapur has highlighted the urgent need for efficient storm water management. The ongoing efforts by the BMC team are crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of the monsoon rains. Heavy rains have inundated several areas, creating challenges for residents and local authorities alike. The swift response by the BMC is a testament to the importance of inter-municipal cooperation in addressing natural disasters.

Junior Engineer Akash Rainak noted the importance of timely intervention, stating, “Our priority is to ensure that the storm water drains are cleared efficiently to prevent further flooding and ensure the safety of the residents.” The utilisation of advanced machinery and skilled manpower is expected to enhance the effectiveness of the flood relief operations in Kolhapur. As the monsoon season progresses, continuous efforts will be required to manage and mitigate the impact of heavy rains. The collaboration between BMC and Kolhapur Municipal Corporation serves as a model for effective disaster management and reinforces the need for preparedness in urban planning and infrastructure development.

The BMC’s timely assistance to Kolhapur highlights the critical role of proactive measures in disaster management. By deploying resources and expertise, the BMC aims to support Kolhapur in overcoming the current flood crisis, ensuring the well-being of its residents and restoring normalcy in the affected areas.
