The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a show-cause notice to veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mithun Chakraborty over alleged unauthorized constructions at his bungalow near Erangal beach in Malad.
The civic body cited violations under Section 475A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, stating that two ground-floor structures with mezzanine floors and three temporary 10×10 sheds made from wooden planks, glass partitions, and AC sheet roofs were erected without mandatory approvals. According to BMC officials, if Chakraborty fails to provide a satisfactory response, the constructions could be demolished at his expense, and legal proceedings may follow. The actor, however, has dismissed the allegations, asserting that no illegal structures exist on his premises. “I have already responded to the notice. There’s not even an inch of unauthorized construction,” Chakraborty said in a public statement.
This is not the first time Chakraborty’s property has attracted municipal scrutiny. A similar notice was issued to him in 2011. The renewed action comes as part of BMC’s intensified drive against unauthorized structures in the Malad region, with over 100 identified buildings scheduled for demolition by month-end. The case reflects a broader urban governance challenge in Mumbai, where enforcement of building norms frequently intersects with high-profile property disputes.
While Chakraborty defends his ownership rights, BMC’s move signals a strong stance on unauthorised developments in the city’s coastal zones.
