The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is stepping up efforts to combat the growing problem of illegal waste dumping in the areas of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur. In an initiative to curb this growing menace, the municipal corporation has decided to install display boards at strategic locations to prevent the dumping of garbage on vacant plots and roadside corners.
The new measure aims to raise awareness and encourage responsible waste disposal across the 41 wards under BMC jurisdiction. This move comes in response to the increasing frequency of waste being discarded at unauthorised locations, a practice that not only damages the aesthetic value of these areas but also contributes to public health concerns. Municipal authorities have expressed concerns that the growing habit of littering in such vulnerable spots is not only disruptive but also difficult to manage. As municipal waste teams focus their attention on designated garbage collection points, these unauthorised dump sites remain neglected, making it a constant challenge for waste management personnel. To tackle this issue, the BMC has outlined a comprehensive plan, including the installation of display boards across the problem areas. These boards, measuring 3 feet by 2 feet, will be mounted on poles at locations where waste has frequently been dumped. The boards will serve a dual purpose—first, to inform citizens that these spaces are not designated for waste disposal and, second, to warn of the potential legal consequences for those caught violating this directive. With the new boards in place, the BMC intends to curb public ignorance and deter individuals from indulging in unlawful dumping practices.
However, the display boards are only part of a broader strategy to address the larger issue of waste management. In a bid to modernise waste collection processes, the BMC is also in the process of acquiring GPS-enabled waste collection trucks. These advanced dumpers will be tracked in real-time through a central control room, allowing officials to monitor daily garbage collection and ensure waste is properly transported to authorised sites. The move is expected to enhance operational efficiency and provide a solution to waste mismanagement, which has plagued several urban localities. In the long term, the BMC is looking to eliminate the use of traditional roadside waste bins. Instead, they plan to introduce hydraulic compactor dumpers and hook loaders, which will be stationed at specific locations across Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur. These waste collection systems will allow for more efficient waste management and address some of the challenges faced by the current infrastructure.
On average, around 450 tonnes of waste is generated daily from these areas, highlighting the scale of the challenge. The initiative to curb illegal waste dumping is thus a crucial step toward ensuring that the urban environment remains clean and sustainable. By modernising waste collection systems and implementing strict regulations against unauthorised dumping, BMC hopes to create a more organised and hygienic environment for residents. The issue of illegal waste dumping is not new to the region. In the past, similar efforts have been made to curb encroachment on vacant plots through the installation of notice boards. The current initiative, however, represents a more comprehensive approach that not only addresses the dumping problem but also introduces technological innovations in waste collection.
