The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oil India Ltd (OIL) to set up a compressed biogas plant in the capital city. The plant aims to produce about 8 tons of compressed biogas daily, which will be used as CNG (compressed natural gas). This project is designed to address both waste management and renewable energy goals. The biogas plant will have a processing capacity of 200 tons per day (TPD) and will be built on an eight-acre site with an investment of Rs 175 crore. The project is expected to be completed within two years.
Under the MoU, OIL will fund, operate, and manage the biogas project, while the BMC will supply the biodegradable waste needed for the plant. The Government of Odisha will also support the initiative to ensure its success. The plant will help reduce the waste burden in Bhubaneswar by processing around 200 metric tons of waste daily, converting it into biogas and organic manure. This aligns with Odisha’s environmental and development goals, promoting sustainable urban growth.
Krushna Chandra Mohapatra, Odisha’s Minister for Housing and Urban Development, highlighted the project’s potential to improve sanitation in the city, urging OIL to complete the plant ahead of schedule. Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, called the project an innovative approach that integrates development, environmental preservation, and public welfare, while also fostering technology-driven economic activities and employment opportunities.
