BMC Sets August 27 Deadline For Tardeo Willington View Residents Eviction

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a final eviction deadline of August 27 for residents of Willington View, a high-rise building in Tardeo, after declaring the structure unsafe for habitation. Civic officials have warned that forceful eviction measures will be initiated if occupants fail to vacate the premises by the stipulated date.

The decision follows a detailed structural audit of the building, which identified severe deterioration posing significant safety risks. Officials stated that the high-rise has developed critical structural weaknesses due to ageing, inadequate maintenance, and environmental exposure, making immediate evacuation necessary to prevent potential accidents. BMC representatives confirmed that multiple prior notices had been issued to the residents, advising them to vacate voluntarily. However, several occupants reportedly continued to stay in the building, citing disputes over relocation arrangements and dissatisfaction with available alternative accommodation. The civic body has now adopted a firm stance, stressing that public safety takes precedence over all other concerns.

In its latest notice, the BMC has clearly communicated that municipal authorities will not be held responsible for any mishap occurring after the deadline if residents choose to remain. The civic administration has also coordinated with local police to ensure smooth execution of the eviction process in case of resistance. The eviction order is part of the corporation’s broader safety enforcement drive targeting dangerous and dilapidated buildings across Mumbai ahead of the peak monsoon period. Officials highlighted that unstable structures are at higher risk of partial or complete collapse during heavy rainfall, making proactive action crucial.

Willington View, located in one of Mumbai’s prime residential zones, has been under scrutiny for several months due to recurring safety complaints from both residents and neighbouring properties. While some occupants have already moved out following the initial warnings, a sizeable number remain, leading to the current hard deadline. Civic engineers have recommended either extensive repairs or complete redevelopment of the property to bring it up to current safety standards. The BMC has assured that it will work with housing authorities and private developers to explore redevelopment possibilities once the building is fully vacated.

The corporation has also urged citizens across the city to cooperate with safety audits and evacuation notices, stressing that such measures are intended to safeguard lives rather than disrupt them.
