BMC Seizes Equipment in Crackdown on Churchgate Khau Galli

In a decisive move, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a crackdown on illegal food vendors operating along J Tata Road in Churchgate, a popular area known for its vibrant “khau gallis.” These food lanes are a staple of Mumbai’s street food culture, offering affordable dishes to both locals and visitors. However, many of the food stalls in the area have been operating without proper permissions, leading to the BMC’s intervention.

On December 25 and 26, 2024, BMC officials seized equipment from several illegal vendors in Churchgate’s khau galli, including gas cookers, temporary structures, and other items used by hawkers. This action is part of an ongoing effort to manage and regulate the growing number of food stalls that are operating in violation of municipal regulations. Despite the confiscation of their equipment, many of the vendors resumed their operations soon after the raid, with several returning by Thursday night. The BMC’s efforts to clear the area have led to a temporary disruption in the operations of these food stalls. Some vendors, despite losing their cooking equipment and shelter, have continued to set up makeshift stands, causing further congestion in the already narrow walkways. Items such as tables and chairs from the now-closed stalls still clutter the area, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate. Many vendors are now attempting to recover their confiscated equipment from the BMC officials.

Khau gallis, which are short lanes filled with a variety of food stalls offering budget-friendly meals, have become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s culinary culture. Locations like Ghatkopar Khau Gali, Carter Road Khau Gali, and CSMT Khau Gali are famous for their food offerings, drawing crowds in search of delicious street food. However, the unregulated nature of these stalls has often led to issues related to safety, cleanliness, and traffic congestion, prompting the BMC to take action. Despite the inconvenience caused to both vendors and customers, the BMC’s actions are aimed at ensuring that street food operations in Mumbai are better regulated and operate in a safe and hygienic environment. With this crackdown, the civic body intends to bring order to the chaos that often surrounds Mumbai’s beloved khau gallis while addressing concerns over public safety and health.
