In a landmark move set to redefine Mumbai’s urban landscape, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully taken possession of 120 acres of Mahalakshmi Race Course land, culminating a protracted legal and administrative battle. This pivotal decision, authorized by the State Government, paves the way for the creation of an expansive Central Park, integrated with gardens and open spaces, aimed at enriching the city’s environmental and recreational assets.
Originally leased to the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) in 1914, the 211-acre race course faced uncertainty upon the expiration of its lease in 2013, amidst debates over renewal terms. With the state’s endorsement, BMC assumes stewardship over 120 acres, while RWITC retains 91 acres for its continued operational use, marking a balanced resolution between public and private interests.
Dr. Bhushan Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner, expressed enthusiasm for the forthcoming development, stating, “The transformation of Mahalakshmi Race Course into a Central Park and green space signifies a significant stride towards enhancing urban livability for Mumbaikars. This initiative underscores BMC’s commitment to sustainable urban planning and public welfare.” The agreement between BMC and RWITC, finalized through extensive deliberations, resolves key issues regarding land division, ensuring mutual consent and cooperation in addressing outstanding concerns. Municipal authorities have pledged swift resolution of remaining logistical challenges to expedite the project’s commencement.
However, the Maharashtra government’s proposal to convert a portion of the historic Mahalaxmi Racecourse into a large park stirred controversy, drawing criticism from various quarters. Critics, including civic activists, voiced apprehensions over potential commercial exploitation and the displacement of traditional club activities, urging stringent safeguards to preserve the area’s recreational character.
Despite opposition, BMC defended the initiative, highlighting urgent infrastructural imperatives to refurbish the aging racecourse and mitigate safety hazards. Assurances have been made to maintain the site’s non-commercial status, underscoring BMC’s strategic focus on enhancing public access and environmental sustainability.
