The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a definitive deadline of 31 May 2026 for the reconstruction of the Sion railway flyover, a key arterial connection between eastern and western Mumbai. Officials emphasised that meticulous coordination with the railway department will be crucial to minimise disruption to commuters while ensuring timely completion of the infrastructure upgrade.
During a review meeting chaired by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, top civic and railway officials outlined the phased reconstruction schedule. The meeting was attended by senior infrastructure and engineering officials, alongside the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), highlighting the importance of traffic management and public convenience in tandem with construction activity. The reconstruction plan entails completion of the Lal Bahadur Shastri Road underpass by December 2025, followed by the Dharavi-side underpass by February 2026. Girder installations for the northern and southern halves of the railway bridge are slated for the first weeks of March and April 2026 respectively, with approach roads on both sides expected to be ready by mid-April. Works on the eastern approach road will commence thereafter and are projected to conclude within 45 days. Once completed, the flyover is expected to be operational from 1 June 2026.
An official noted that the timely fabrication and delivery of girders from Nagpur and Ambala will be a critical factor in meeting the deadline. BMC representatives will actively supervise the process, ensuring logistical efficiency and reducing the risk of delays. The project reflects a broader commitment by the BMC to enhance urban mobility and reduce congestion in high-traffic zones. By integrating rigorous planning, phased execution, and cross-agency coordination, authorities aim to provide a safer, smoother commute for citizens while maintaining essential connectivity throughout the construction period.
