The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reported a successful Ganesh Visarjan 2024, with a total of 38,094 Lord Ganesha idols immersed by 9 PM on Sunday. This year’s immersion process, conducted over a one-and-a-half-day period, was marked by a peaceful and smooth transition, reflecting the efficient management of the festival’s conclusion.
Among the immersed idols, there were 195 public (sarvjanik) idols, 37,879 household (gharguti) idols, and 20 Hartalika idols. The BMC highlighted that out of the total, 18,696 idols were immersed in artificial lakes, aligning with the city’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. An official from the BMC noted that the immersion process has been free from major incidents, contributing to the overall success of the festival. Specifically, 143 sarvjanik idols were immersed in artificial lakes, alongside 18,537 gharguti idols and 16 Hartalika idols. The use of artificial lakes underscores the city’s efforts to reduce environmental impact and manage the large volume of idol immersions effectively.
The Ganeshotsav 2024, which began on Saturday, saw vibrant celebrations across Maharashtra. Enthusiastic crowds, including families and children, participated in the festival with traditional fervour, carrying idols in various modes of transport amidst lively drum beats and chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya.” Public celebrations featured elaborate processions, with many Ganesh mandals hosting grand displays in their local areas. In preparation for the festival, extensive security measures were put in place, with approximately 15,000 police personnel deployed across Mumbai. This included 32 Deputy Commissioners, 45 Assistant Commissioners, and a substantial contingent of constables and other security staff to ensure the smooth conduct of festivities.
However, the BMC has issued a cautionary note regarding potential hazards during idol immersions. Trial netting by the Maharashtra Fisheries Department revealed the presence of stingrays and jellyfish in immersion areas, urging citizens to exercise caution to avoid bites and stings. Overall, the BMC’s meticulous planning and execution have contributed to a largely incident-free celebration, reflecting well on the management of this major cultural event.
